Growing Up: Silk Scarf, Blazer, and Heels [Plus: Three of the Internet’s BEST Resources on How to Tie a Scarf]

Pink Hermes scarf

A long time ago, a family friend gifted me an Hermès scarf in my favorite color, pink.  I fell in love with it immediately but have always struggled to figure out when/where/how to wear it.  In my mind, I always thought of a silk scarf as something of a business formal accessory–I remember once hearing from somebody that a silk scarf for ladies is equivalent to a nice silk tie for men, a signal that you have credibility in the world of business.

TO CORPORATE-FY THIS LOOK: Make it more formal with a collared shirt and tailored wool trousers.

Anyway, I started to realize that there are actually lots of different occasions where you can wear a silk scarf, and not all of them formal.  I especially like using a brightly printed scarf to introduce a pop of color into your look.

What I’m perpetually scared of, however, is to come across as too flight stewardess-y.  The good news is that there are actually a ton of different ways you can tie a scarf.  To refresh my own memory, I must have checked out at least 100 different resources on Google regarding how to tie a scarf.  These three were my favorite by far so I thought I’d save you the searching and share them with you.

  • Harper’s Bazar: 7 Cool Girl Ways to Tie a Scarf – I love the GIFs in this one!  If you have no idea what you can actually do with a scarf, this relatively short guide (it features 7 styles) is easy to digest and gives a range of scarf tying options.
  • Nordstrom: 4 Scarves 16 Ways – What I like most about this video is that it shows you how you can tie scarves that are different shapes (e.g. square scarves, oblong scarves, wraps).  It’s inspired me to go out and buy an oblong scarf!
  • Hermès: 21 Ways to Wear a Scarf – Straight from the source itself, Hermès shows us how they would style a silk scarf (or in many cases, scarves).  Now, if this doesn’t make you want to drop $395 on a 36’x36’ scarf, I don’t know what will 😉

Regardless of your budget, there are really gorgeous scarves out there and endless ways to tie them (for even more, check out 21 Unique Ways to Wear Your Scarf).  Now that you know how to style them, it’s time to stock up!
